Football News24/7 Barcelona ended their pre-season campaign with a 1-0 loss to AC Milan. Ernesto Valverde took a very inexperienced squad over to the US due to a lot of players taking part in the World Cup. And the results have reflected just that, with Barca losing 4-2 to Roma and then against Milan – Andre Silva scored a last-minute winner in Santa Clara. However, that doesn’t mean that Valverde can’t take any positives back to Catalonia with him before the Spanish Super Cup game vs Sevilla on August 12. New signings Malcom, Arthur Melo and Clement Lenglet have proved their worth already, while some La Masia graduates have been given a chance to shine. Barca’s famous academy has been in decline for several years, with Sergi Roberto the last player to really make the cut in the first-team. But one name has really got the fans talking throughout the US tour; 18-year-old Ricard ‘Riqui’ Puig. The midfielder shone in the penalty shootout victory against Tottenham and was given another 45 minutes v Milan, coming on for Paco Alcacer. And Puig made another big impression, showing that the unique La Masia playing style is as prominent as ever. VIDEO: PUIG’S INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHT Shades of Andres Iniesta there. On several occasions, Puig demonstrated unbelievable skill to get away from players, while also producing some top passes. There were a few errors, but the fact he never tried to hide from the ball is testament to the La Masia style. And Barca fans were understandably excited. Some of the reaction below highlights just how much his reputation has grown in such a short space of time. Even AC Milan manager Gennaro Gattuso chipped in about Puig after the final whistle. “Riqui is a spectacle,” Gattuso said. “To see boys who still have a child’s face and how they treat the ball is something that amazes me, they feel football inside and it’s something like poetry. “I’ve heard them talking about him for some time, it’s something you can’t cut and paste into another club. “They don’t base themselves on a tactical model, but a common idea, I am a bit jealous of their school.” The kid looks like he has a bright future. Now it’s down to Valverde to manage his progression correctly. Do YOU want to write for GiveMeSport?
